Day 10, Donsö to Varberg, 42nm

Saturday, 13 July

Grey skies. The ambulance goes very fast!

Wind at last! – but a much greyer day – a warm South Easterly filled in nicely and we were soon sliding away at 6-7 knots. We negotiated the last of the various islands and rocks and had a clear reach down Sweden’s West coast passing slower boats with ease.

A nice cup of tea

Adjusting the jib sheet

David got out his handy billy to barber-haul the jib sheet (are you keeping up?)

Spot the handy billy!

And then needed a little rest on Park Avenue…

Up in the boom!
Looks very relaxing!
And he can keep a weather eye on the helm

Sadly this is Sam’s last day with us, but at least he had a proper sail today

Sam enjoying the helm
And sheeting

The wind continued to strengthen, up to 14-15 knots and David touched 10 knots. Otherwise we were easily dancing along at 8-9 knots. Even requiring crew on the rail!

Lean out boys!
It started to rain, but the wind was steady
Alex playing the main sheet

We arrived in Varberg just after 6 hours of sailing and rafted alongside a Dutch yacht called ‘Pintail’. The rain set in with a damp persistent permanence – yesterday’s blue sky seems a long time ago and far away!

Another castle

A Viking Longboat in the harbour

We said goodbye to Sam and thanked him for being such a brilliant crew, helping us to gain confidence and always ready to make a perfect cup of tea!

We will miss you Sam!

Varberg has the most refined looking swimming platform we have ever seen!

I was glad of my IKEA umbrella
It was built in 1866, and again in 1886, but twice destroyed by a storm
This replacement was built in 1912

And of course there is a castle:

Not as impressive as Marstrand
Manning the guns
This one was also used as a prison
View towards the town

We ate in a friendly dockside restaurant and snuggled in our warm cabin out of the endless rain.
