Day 24, Kiel

Saturday, 27 July

The new St Michael’s cathedral

We have decided to stay here another night so we can go into the canal on Sunday, which should line us up for a North Sea passage to Terschelling on Tuesday as that’s when conditions are looking best.

It’s a lovely sunny day and we took the ferry up to Kiel with Marc and Monique. We saw a porpoise on the way and enjoyed seeing the other marinas – research for next time!

On the ferry!

We walked through the old botanical gardens and into town to the cathedral

Spot the difference!

The Cathedral has been completely rebuilt after WWII with a similar steeple to the old one.

We could only go inside the porch as the rest was shut, but we could glimpse the fine 15th century carved and gilded alter piece which had been stowed away before all the bombing.

And some modern stained glass

St Michael had a rather fed up looking dragon

Kiel has also been rebuilt, but it had a good vibe with a pedestrian thoroughfare and lots of shoppers enjoying the nice weather.

One of the only buildings not destroyed is the old fish sorting house which is now a maritime museum, it looked good but we didn’t go in.

There’s an enormous cruise ship taking on passengers. Fortunately it looks too big for the Kiel canal as I wouldn’t want to be stuck next to that in the lock!

Way too big!

We had the best shrimp sandwich on the promenade before we took the ferry back to Laboe.

Yum yum!

We spent the afternoon doing planning and watching some of the Olympics. The Italian restaurant by the marina was excellent – thanks Kevin (aka BB)

Another lovely sunset
