Saturday, 20 July

We set off from Rødvig in no wind at all on a glassy sea, pointing towards the bluff of the island of Møn on the horizon.

The sea was very green and scummy looking

We were delighted to see first a seal popping his head out to look at us, and then the distinctive fins and movements of porpoises! No photos I’m afraid.

Once the wind got up to 3 knots we put the sails up and were impressed as La Bamba reached up to 4 knots in 3.5 knots of wind. It was peaceful with the engine off as we glided along. Our crew got on with their jobs.

We even had some totty on the foredeck!

We were soon passing the majestic and locally famous chalk cliffs

and we put the sails away and motored the rest of the way as the wind died.
Frances got a little sleepy, boats do this to her

We reached Møn (English spelling Moen) in the early afternoon and were glad to come in with Quattordici, a Dutch boat that had been next to us in Rødvig.

We rafted up together, it was helpful as they are longer than us (52ft) and knew that this side mooring was the right size, whereas we haven’t quite got used to how long we are to fit a space on the dock. They have a lovely dog called Billy.

Mark and Monique from Quattordici were very friendly and helpful, showing us the best routes to take in the Netherlands once we leave the Kiel canal. We will have to do a 24 hour sail after Cuxhaven… hopefully we will have some crew to help us! We enjoyed a drink with them on board.

Then went for a swim on another sandy beach

– it’s lovely cool water on a hot day. Frances and Olivia have definitely brought the sunshine as we have had the best weather so far while they have been on board! They leave tomorrow so no doubt normal service will resume!

We went round the corner to an Italian restaurant, Portofino, with delicious food (delightful after all the breaded batter on the fish in Rødvig) and they sang to us in Italian!

They also played some Bob Marley and Pink Floyd. It was all quite surreal when he began ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ but very enjoyable!
There is a beautiful huge orange moon tonight, hard to photograph.

Goodnight from La Bamba!
