Porto to Madeira Part II

Birthday Boy!

Saturday 29 August

Happy Birthday Will!

We have just found out it’s Will’s birthday today!

He took this footage of us leaving Porto yesterday. It doesn’t quite do justice to the crazy leaping and crashing as we left port, but it gives you the idea!

At first the winds were kind and we sailed all night and for most of the morning. Here’s the first sunset:

See you tomorrow!

And here’s the first night:

We had a very bright and beautiful moon
Will on helm at night – it was darker!

And sunrise with the birthday boy.

Good morning sunshine!

Our watches start at 8pm with 3 hours on and three hours off in pairs until 8 am.

During the day we rest when we feel like it.

Sleepy boys
I’m the only one awake 🙂

We enjoyed a birthday breakfast of sausage, scrambled egg, tomato and toast – yum! It’s also good to have a hungry and much happier crew today!

Breakfast!

Sadly the wind died and we are now on a mission to find an elusive band of Northerly wind filling in from the South (according to forecasts!). So it was on and off sailing all day – with a bit too much off.

Busy boys!

There is shipping out here and we keep an eye on the AIS to look out for the huge monster cargo ships.

We haven’t seen any other yachts. And we are beyond the fishing boats and lobster pots.

As it’s so calm, we got our table out and had lasagne and salad followed by cake and tinned peaches. We donned our leis in honour of Will catching up with me in years of wisdom.

Dinner time

I took advantage of the calm to raise our Madeira courtesy flag.

Will and I were on watch for sunset!

A birthday to remember!

Fun fact: the boat that suffered an orca attack off Porto the day before we set off was trailing exactly the same orca deterrent as us!

This shows where the attack was

And there have been several more attacks near where we have been!

We are now out of the attack zone and La Bamba has proved yet again that she is a lucky boat!

Goodnight all! Xxx

Only 380 miles to go!
