Wind from front and back

Viveiro to À Coruña 55nm

Friday 7 August

20 knots of wind was forecast and we got quite excited, but leaving the bay at Viveiro we had to motor to get out.

Even then the wind was only up to 12-14 knots, dead behind us, just enough to cruise along goose wing.

Beautiful coast

It died and we had to motor for a few hours, but then it filled in from ahead so we could use the Yankee and the Stay sail to whizz along at 7 knots.

Nice looking beach

We have our deterrant out for the orcas, we saw some dolphins but not close.

By the time we approached A Coruña we were back to goose wing again. We didn’t use Lily because the wind was too much from dead behind, and she doesn’t like that so much. Also we have no crew and can get quite lazy!

Just us!

It was very exciting arriving in À Coruña because we are going to meet up with Frances and Angela and friends for Frances’ birthday which is on the same day as the total solar eclipse!

Castle on the way in

We are very happy that we have made our target a day early, we are on schedule!

À Coruña seems a lovely town and La Bamba is moored in the friendly Real Marina right by the old town.

The huge square is set up for the free events but it seemed one was just finishing as we arrived. We did find Astérix and Obelix though!

We enjoyed delicious Spanish tapas and rice al fresco. The old town looks like it’s going to be fun to explore. So lovely to be in Spain.

We are here until the 13th so there will be a pause in the blog. Hasta luego!

  1. As you linger a while in Coruna,
no doubt eating clams, moules and tuna,
Tell us, how DO you deter an Orca?
As you know, we don’t get them in Yorkshire.

PS Happy Birthday to Frances when she gets there!!

  2. Didn’t Paul Simon write a song about safeguarding from orchas ? (with my thanks and apologies)

    “The problem’s serious”
is what she said to me
“but, the answer’s easy if you take it logically
I’d like to help you in your struggle to sail free
There must be fifty safeguards from the orchas”

She said, “It’s really not my habit to intrude
    Furthermore, I hope my meaning
    Won’t be lost or misconstrued
    But I’ll repeat myself
At the risk of being crude
There must be fifty safeguards from the orchas”
    Fifty safeguards from the orchas??

“Play them a loud tune, June,
    something they don’t like, Mike,
or something that they do, Lou?
    Just keep yourselves free
    Try a nasty smell, El,
Or a colour that they hate, Kate,
And pour it in the sea, Lee,
    Just listen to me

“Throw them what they crave, Dave
    take along a decoy, Roy,
    lead them another way, Ray
    Just listen to me
    a good tip from Frances:
    Do Viveiro dances.
Get them in a spin, Fin,
    and get yourselves free! “

She said, “It grieves me so
To see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do
    To make you smile again”
    I said, “I appreciate that
    And would you please explain
    About the fifty ways?”

She said, “Why don’t we both
    Just sleep on it tonight
And I believe in the morning
You’ll begin to see the light”
    And then she kissed me
And I realized she probably was right
There must be fifty safeguards from the orchas

      1. So nice to have your words of appreciation! thank you, Sue….. seems to me this is the Big Issue out there! Everything else should be plain sailing and lots of fun…. and even big issues have a funny side…. when did we stop calling them killer whales anyway? OK they don’t kill us and we don’t know why… when they could so easily!!

I love this blog too !

        Jo xx

  3. What a lovely day of sailing ⛵️🌊 From wind behind us to wind ahead, La Bamba had a bit of everything on the way from Viveiro to A Coruna. And what a beautiful arrival into such a lovely Spanish town 🇪🇸.

It’s wonderful to hear that you made your target a day early and are now safely moored right by the old town. I hope you enjoyed the tapas, the celebrations, and most importantly, Frances’ birthday and the total solar eclipse ☀️🌑🎉
