Cruising the Rias

A Pobro da Caraminal to Combarro 23nm

Monday 17 August

Calm waters

We only have a short hop today, welcome after yesterday’s supersail.

Max took to helming very well

We charged out of Ria da Arousa at 7-8 knots in a beautiful wind on flat water and new crew Max took the helm.

A passing rock island

He had already gained the line-coiling badge by quickly mastering the mooring ropes.

Relaxing in the Rias

As usual the wind was fickle and not long after we got out of the Ria the wind died and we sadly had to motor the rest of the way.

No coats today!

It’s a very beautiful sailing area here with pretty towns along the shore. Combarro is recommended as not to be missed so that’s why we are heading to the very end of this next Ria de Pontevedra.

Approaching Combarro

We moored at the large marina – it was very hot so we had a swim off the back of the boat in beautifully cold water.

Even Penny went in!

Penny and I explored the pretty town (after the bus tours had left!)

Before the bus tours have left
After!

Lots of narrow stone streets built right onto the granite rocks, very charming.

There are lots of little stone sheds on pillars: these are granaries and are designed like this to defend the grain from mice and rats.

All the towns used to have them but only Combarro has 30 survivors – the most in Galicia!

Stone pavements and granite blended together

We ate at Leucoina restaurant on a terrace by the sea. The fresh fish was excellent, turbot today.

There is no wind forecast for the next couple of days so we are going to chill here tomorrow and probably find an anchorage for tomorrow night.
