Là Coruña to Muxía 46nm
Friday 14 August

We had a lovely wind of around 14 knots (my favourite!) as we left Corunna after our delightful stay with our family.

Penny has rejoined the crew and it’s great to welcome her back – she was with us on the very first leg to Guernsey.

It was cloudy at first and we zoomed along around 7 knots with the Yankee and main, we did try adding the stay sail but the wind veered behind so that it was probably blocking the Yankee, so we furled it in again.

The coast is as rugged as ever with rocks that are kindly easy to miss.

The depth is 40-70 meters just near the shore, so if you were trying to stay within the recommended 20m to avoid orcas you would basically be on the rocks! We deployed our orca defence and hummed Jo’s 50 safeguards song just to make sure.

We saw a fleeting dolphin and some nice birds but thankfully no orcas. We got Lily up and the sun came out.

We contemplated going round past Finistère today as more wind is forecast but the marina we would have aimed for is full.
As we turned into the Ria de Marina where Muxia lies the wind picked up to 23 knots – we hit 11 – and we were glad we had got Lily down nice and early!

We stormed into the bay and were helped onto our mooring by the friendly Marina staff.

Muxia is a charming small town and a welcome contrast to the big city of Corunna. With the wind picking up and Finistère being quite notorious (Costa del Morte!) we may end up waiting out the wind here – a force 8 is forecast for tomorrow!

After eating amazing fresh wild sea bass at one of the 5 recommended restaurants we are thinking this isn’t a bad place to be stuck!
It’s wonderful to hear that Penny has rejoined the crew, and thankfully you made it safely through the rugged Costa da Morte with no orcas and only a fleeting dolphin encounter 11 knots must have been quite a ride 😄.
With Force 8 forecast and the wild sea bass waiting at the end of the day, I’d say Muxía is definitely the right place to be for now. Enjoy the rest, stay safe, and let the weather settle before tackling Finisterre. Fair winds for the next leg ❤️⛵️.
