Mending and Resting

Gijòn

Tuesday 4 August

Yummy croissants

Will and Jules went out and got us delicious croissants for breakfast, we will probably starve without them! Sadly we say goodbye.. for now.

Goodbye crew – thanks for all the fun!

Today we are staying here to fix the anchor roller and do other jobs. It wasn’t straightforward as the chandler didn’t have a roller so David made one out of a hard cylinder of plastic he bought. His numerous tool kits came in very handy!

I got on with the washing and writing the blog – which are very compatible – filled the water tank and popped to the shops.

The Spanish customs men came round – much more friendly looking than the Dutch (see Terschelling in ‘24) and we now have our blue form!

With Through the Blue

The Through the Blue rowing team came over to say hi – if you google them you can read up on them and they are looking for sponsorship.

They are lovely people, all good rowers already, and one of the women has actually done the race before – they seemed perfectly sane. They had rowed here all the way from Britanny in one go as a training run!

The Romans were here!
A fine church over the old Roman Baths

We took a short walk round this end of Gijòn – there are Roman baths, and various dubious modern sculptures.

On the promontory there’s the old 19th century battery

Somewhat fascist?
Then there’s this one
A good spot to defend

The locals seem to drink cider and young men were holding their bottles high in the air and pouring it into their plastic cup held near their knees – it was rather splashy and spilly – takes all kinds I guess!

I used to have some of these albums

We ate at the closest restaurant, Auga, that just happens to have a Michelin star. Very good eating here in Gijòn.

It was both beautiful and delicious!

We are impressed with this relaxed, comfortable city and would definitely visit again with a bit more time to explore.
