Praia de Agra to Baiona 20nm
Wednesday 19 August

Apart from a small sail leaving the Ria, we had to motor all the way to Baiona.

There was fog.

And no wind!
However we did see a creature of the deep:

But there were some very pretty islands that are in a marine park that you need a permit for to visit. We didn’t bother.

Baiona is basically a castle with a town attached – and it lies in a huge natural harbour, a safe haven in any weather.

It’s a very impressive place to arrive in with the enormous Montereal Castle dominating the bay.

After docking with help from the marina staff (the wind got up for half an our just as we got in…!) we went for a swim on the beach by the castle which made a beautiful backdrop.

I wandered round the old town, nicely pedestrianised, and found 3 churches.

There’s a plaque to commemorate Baiona being the first city to get the news of the discovery of the New World. Something we have seen already claimed by Gijòn and Corunna!

Penny found us a fantastic Tapas bar called Olivando where we enjoyed Iberian ham, scallops, tomatoes, asparagus and squid: what every sailor needs!

The entrance back to the marina is virtually within the castle walls.

Goodbye Spain – this time tomorrow we’ll be in Portugal!
